Five questions worth asking a seller before you buy

Every item page lets you ask the seller a question before you spend anything. It costs you a minute and it is the single best predictor of how the next six months will go.

1. Which versions have you actually run this on?

Not "what does it support", which invites an optimistic answer. Ask what they have run it on. A seller who says "PHP 8.1 and 8.2, I have not tested 8.3 yet" is being straight with you and is worth buying from.

2. What does the install actually involve?

If the answer is longer than the install guide, the install guide is incomplete. Better to learn that now than at eleven at night on a deadline.

3. Is the demo running the version I would be downloading?

Demos drift. A seller whose demo is two versions ahead is showing you something you cannot buy. Worth confirming.

4. How do you handle updates?

You want to hear that updates are free, that there is a changelog, and roughly how often they ship. Vagueness here usually means the item is finished in the sense of abandoned.

5. Does it do this specific thing I need?

Name the exact thing. Not "is it flexible", which everyone says yes to. "Can I have two currencies with different tax rules" gets a real answer, and if it is no, you have saved yourself a refund.

Read the answer, not just the content

How fast they reply and how carefully they read your question tells you what support will feel like after you have paid. A seller who answers precisely in a few hours before a sale will do the same after one.
